This website is a complete RBT study guide for those looking to develop their career as a Registered Behavior Technician. You can find detailed information regarding tasks related to RBTs. All the skills that are required to understand your client better are listed here. The information you will encounter within this website will help you to excel your career as RBT.
In this website tasks related to RBTs cover under six units. It includes the process of measuring data, making assessments according to that attained data, working on developing skills in clients, dealing with different behaviors, documenting day to day progress & the professional boundaries for RBT.
Unit A: Measurement
Behaviors can be analyzed by measuring it. Measurement of behavior is basically collecting data regarding the actions shown by the client. On the basis of these action prognosis & treatment plans are based. There are certain tasks involved in behavior measurement i.e:
- Data Collection
- Continuous measurement procedures (includes frequency, rate, duration, latency, interresponse time (IRT)
- Discontinuous measurement procedures (includes partial interval recording, whole interval recording and momentary time sampling)
- Permanent product recording (includes focus on outcome, tangible product)
- Entering data and updating graphs.
- Describe behavior and environment in observable and measurable terms.
Unit B: Assessments
Intervention plans are developed after completing assessments. RBT’s carried out important tasks in assessments. Tasks for RBTs are as follow:
- Conduct preference assessment (include indirect assessment, free operant preference assessment, single stimulus preference, paired stimulus preference, multiple stimulus with replacement preference & multiple stimulus without replacement assessments)
- Assist with individualized assessment procedures based on curriculum, developmental, social skills (it includes verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment & Placement Program VB-MAPP, Assessment of Basic Language & Learning Skills Revised ABLLS-R & Assessment of Functional Living Skills AFLS)
- Assist with functional assessment procedures. It is functional behavior assessments that work on cause & effect relation (it includes indirect assessments, descriptive assessment & functional analysis)
Unit C: Skill Acquisition
Term skill acquisition refers to learning new skills. RBTs play an important role in teaching new skills to clients. Tasks related to RBTs for skill acquisition are as follow:
- Identify the essential component of a written skill acquisition
- Prepare for session according to plan
- Figure out reinforcements (continuous/ intermittent schedules)
- Apply discrete trial teaching procedures.
- Apply naturalistic teaching procedure (e.g incidental teaching)
- Apply task analyzed chaining procedure
- Apply discrimination training
- Apply stimulus control transfer procedures.
- Apply prompt & prompt fading procedures.
- Apply generalization & maintenance procedures.
- Apply shaping procedures.
- Apply token economy procedures.
Unit D: Behavior Reduction
Behavior reduction is basically modifying maladaptive behavior to acceptable behavior. There are intervention plans for behavior reduction. Not every individual needs a behavior reduction plan. These plans are made for those clients whose learning & growth are affected by inappropriate behavior. The tasks related to RBTs in behavior reduction plans are as follow:
- Rule out main components of a written behavior reduction plan like targeted behavior, implementation, function, preventive strategies etc.
- Explain common functions of behavior; It can be due to automatic reinforcement, escape or avoidance, attention, access to tangibles & sometimes sensory issues
- Apply management based on modification of antecedent; This modification involves establishing operation or abolishing operations
- Apply differential reinforcement procedure; increase desirable behavior & decrease undesirable behavior by giving or withholding reinforcement. It involves DRO, DRA, DRI & DRL.
- Apply extinction procedures
- Apply crisis/emergency procedures according to protocol.
Unit E: Documentation & Reporting
RBTs play an important role in documenting & reporting sessions. It is vital to consider these documents as it gives a clear picture of day to day sessions. It provides safety to clients as well as therapists. Tasks related to RBT in documentation & reporting are as follow:
- Effectively share information & communicate with a supervisor
- In case of any uncertainty actively seek direction from a supervisor
- Informing about other variables that might affect the client timely
- Making objective session notes by describing what occurred during session
- Follow legal workplace data collection & documentation policies & requirements
Unit F: Professional Conduct & Scope of Practice
RBTs play an important role in healthcare sectors. To be an effective & competent therapist there are some code of ethics you should follow:
- BACB’s supervision requirement & role in service of RBTs.
- Response of RBTs to feedback.
- Interact with concerned people with given consent.
- Keep professional boundaries intact.
- Maintain client dignity.
